However, supplementing these essentials with a social media presence, references and blogs can offer different perspectives for recruiters and put you ahead of the competition.

This summer is a great time to start a blog by focusing on your internship. Whether you write about your organization’s work or just your favorite parts of the office, your internship readily provides subject matter for a weekly post. Not only can employers see a sample of your writing – a skill needed in nearly all careers – but it illustrates that you are a dedicated member of the team who takes your job seriously.

As your experience in the workplace grows, so will your blog’s subject matter and depth. According to Mandy McEwan, founder and CEO of Mod Girl Marketing, your blog is the place to show everyone exactly how much you know.

“Choose what people want to hear," she advises. “Search for other blogs in your industry and look for popular blog posts. This will give you a good idea of what your circle likes to talk about and read.”

Not only do blogs help demonstrate expertise, but they also increase visibility. A frequently-updated blog will show up on a search and increase your digital presence dramatically. Nicole Beachum of Social Media Today says that keywords are no longer the only determinants of search results. Frequency of posts also plays a large role.

“As technology has evolved, Google (and other search engines) are using advanced formulas that determine how frequently you post and update your web site in addition to the origination and quality of the content you post,” she comments. Keeping your blog up to date with information about your internship pays off.

With many recruiters today evaluating a potential hire’s online footprint, a quality blog with your name attached provides another leg up. Your value as a future employee should be the first thing employers see when they search about you online, and a blog about your work experience helps make that happen, especially when coupled with professional Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts. 

Long workdays are exhausting, but as tempting as it may be to spend your evenings binge watching Netflix, carve out some time each week to gather your thoughts in a blog. Going the extra mile by writing about your summer or semester internship separates you from the competition and gives insight into your expertise.
