Ashley Benvenuti: Making an IMPACT

Indiana INTERNnet celebrated internship excellence on Feb. 4, 2015, at the 9th Annual IMPACT Awards luncheon. Though the event is over and the winners have been announced, we are continuing to celebrate the nominees’ successes.

These are their stories.

IIN: Your nominator wrote that you “worked to create new training and development opportunities” for employees at Johnson Controls. That’s a great experience for an intern!

AB: What I did was create a deck to teach employees about the hiring process at Johnson Controls. There was nothing set up for this and managers were very unsure about the steps they needed to take. There were often many people in the HR office asking questions about next steps. After creating this deck, it was presented and implemented to the automotive interiors division.

IIN: What are one or two other projects that really allowed you to grow?

AB: I led strategy …

Internship fosters unexpected career interest

This is a guest blog from Anna Bailey, senior at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and Intern at Providence Health Care in Terre Haute.

The second semester of my senior year at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College I interned at Providence Health Care in Terre Haute, Ind. Providence Health Care is a skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility helping the Sisters of Providence and people in the surrounding community.

For the semester I interned under the director of health information. This was a very nerve-racking experience at first; I knew nothing about health care since I was a Business Administration major. In this internship I worked side-by-side with my site supervisor, and she helped me learn a large part of medical records and health information at a skilled nursing facility. I assisted her in daily tasks, including filing paper work, auditing charts, opening and closing charts for patients entering and leaving the facility, and …

Internship challenge accepted

Marais Jacon-Duffy graduated from Butler University in Dec. 2014 with a degree in journalism and political science. She is the social media and technology intern with the Indiana House Republican Caucus. In this role, she assists in monitoring and managing caucus social media accounts, creating content, takes photos, videos, and writes press releases.

Flashback to November 2014: I am a month away from my college graduation. I recently accepted an offer to intern with the Indiana House of Representatives Republican Caucus. I couldn’t be more thrilled—for four months I will be in the thick of politics, at the center of news coverage and seeing first-hand what goes into the operations of the state government.

The politics and news junkie in me couldn’t wait to get started.

This would be my first experience in public relations ever. I had never taken a class on public relations, strategic communications or social …

Baldwin & Lyons’ intern uses his interests to find career fit

Mike Starr, actuarial services intern at Baldwin & Lyons, Inc., is not your average intern. Starr earned his master’s degree in student affairs and spent time in the professional world before an internship sparked a career change.

While Mike Starr did not always know what he wanted to do as a career, he always knew what he liked.

The actuarial services intern at Baldwin & Lyons, Inc. in Carmel realized early on that he liked math and science as well as a team environment. Blending those interests, however, proved more difficult before his current internship.

As a physics major at The Ohio State University, Starr assumed that medical school was in his future. When those plans fell through, Starr went back to the drawing board.

“While I was in school, I was extremely involved in different campus activities, so that’s when I became aware of student affairs as a …

The difference a year makes

This is a guest blog by Jara Rowe, social media marketing coordinator at Minnetrista and former Indiana INTERNnet intern.

This time last year, I was working a full-time job, driving two hours round-trip for an internship with Indiana INTERNnet (IIN), and finishing my master’s degree. It was a lot of work, but I was determined it was necessary to take the next step in my career.

Fast-forward a year, I completed my internship with IIN, started and completed an internship with McGowan Insurance Group, Inc., completed my Master of Arts in Public Relations, and started a new full-time job that I love. I am currently the Social Media Marketing Coordinator at Minnetrista.

While interviewing for a part-time position at Minnetrista, I was able to showcase the skills I developed while interning with IIN and my passion for social media. The interviewer recognized my potential and forwarded my information to …
