Description
Interns will have the opportunity to be alongside staff at the Polly Horton Hix Paleo Prep Lab window, learning how to interpret fossils and paleontology to the public. Behind the scenes, interns will learn operations of the lab, including maintenance and program research. The intern will ultimately develop an understanding of how the lab functions and fits within the mission of the Museum.
Responsibilities
The Intern alongside his/her supervisor will develop a project relating to intern’s interests. Possible projects include:
- Interpreting fossils and paleontology to the public.
- Assisting Paleo Lab staff to conduct preparation and consolidation of paleontology specimens in the lab.
- Conducting routine lab maintenance & cleaning.
- Assisting the Vertebrate Paleontologist with materials & methods for specimen preparation as well as molding and casting.
Other responsibilities may include:
- Inventory: Conducting an inventory of portions of the Science Collection —particularly geological materials.
- Researching and developing object-centered program relating to ScienceWorks or Dinosphere.
Qualifications
Intern should be:
- Junior/Senior undergraduate or graduate student studying Geology, Biology, Anthropology, Museum Studies or related field. Field experience is a plus, but not required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience working with children and a desire to interact extensively with the public.
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time and lift and carry up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to work a minimum of 12-15 hours a week.
