Description

Assist with the coordination and implementation of strategies and activities designed to enhance the overall educational experience of students through the development of a comprehensive knowledge-base of wrap around services available to students.  These services can be, but not limited to, those provided by the College, local agencies, and state/federal programs to assist students with their variety of needs or concerns.  The student intern will work collaboratively with all service providers to provide a student-centered environment that supports retention and completion.

 

The internship for the Office of Student Activities is a part-time nine month academic year appointment. The student intern will work approximately 20 hours per week. Supervision is provided by the Director of Student Life. The student intern will primarily assist the Director with providing information and being the key resource for students, staff, and faculty for wrap around services on campus and in the communities in which the Columbus region serves.

Responsibilities

  • Build student, staff, and faculty awareness of area wrap around services.
  • Become an expert in wrap around services provided by the College, local agencies, and state/federal programs to assist students in variety of needs or concerns.
  • Create a tool kit of wrap around services.
  • Plan a Campus/Community Resource Fair for students on campus once a year.
  • Plan and present Wrap Around Support workshops on campus to highlight comprehensive list of services available from the United Way, governmental agencies, and other sources of assistance that students may need. Participants will complete a post-event evaluation of the program.  Participants will be tracked to review student success measures. Present at least one workshop per semester to staff/faculty and other audiences as needed.

Qualifications

A successful candidate must be currently enrolled at Ivy Tech Community College or another accredited higher education institution.  Preference will be given to those with seeking a degree in human services, social work, psychology/counseling, health education, or other related fields.  In addition, the following are required professional competencies:

Demonstrated skills, knowledge, and substantial work experience in the following areas:

  1. Communication. The student intern must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with diverse groups of individuals at all levels of the community.
  2. Neutrality and confidentiality. The student intern must remain non-judgmental and exercise independent judgment and prudence in dealing with sensitive, confidential matters. The intern must maintain strict confidentiality, and demonstrate the ability to treat sensitive or confidential information appropriately.
  3. Problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic thinking. The student intern must be able to work with those in need to clarify problems, gather, and analyze relevant information, and provide appropriate options of services and resources.
  4. Composure and presentation. The student intern should maintain a professional demeanor, should have strong presentation skills, and should be able to organize and communicate information to groups of varying size and hierarchal levels in the organization.
