Community Kitchen Management Trainee

Description

The candidate will be observing and assisting in running a community kitchen that serves 60-140 people a day free of charge. Currently operations are Tuesday - Thursday and service is drive-thru only. An additional 140 meals are prepared and delivered on Wednesdays. Learning how to work with and organize volunteers and interact with people from all walks of life will also be an important part of the internship experience.

Responsibilities

Assist with planning, preparing and packaging/serving meals for 60-280 people (everyone gets the same meal).

Learn Indiana Department of Health regulations and help to insure that safe practices are being followed.

Interact with volunteers who help with meal preparation, service, and clean-up.

Be courteous and respectul to volunteers and guests.

Learn how important is is to respect all people no matter what situation they are in.

Learn how to and assist with keeping inventories of food and supplies needed for daily operations.

Help with ordering needed food and supplies.

Observe how to develop and maintain relationships with local food sources such as restaurants, grocery stores, and farmers especially if they are able to donate food to be used at the Mission.

Opportunity exists for developing strategies for improving how the kitchen functions and how meals are served.

Qualifications

Love of food and people.

Good communication skills in person, on the phone and online.

Interest in cooking for large groups.

Ability to learn and carry out Indiana Department of Health requirements.

Desire to successfully complete ServSafe Food Handler Certification.

Leadership skills and ability to work as a team.

Ability to stay calm under pressure and be highly flexible as situations change in the kitchen.
