Description

The StarPoint Summer Camp Cabin Intern will research, plan, and create three assessment lessons that they will lead for their assigned cabin. To assist with this project, they will receive trainings in camp procedures/expectations, how to write a lesson plan, and how to include imbedded assessments. They will also have a chance to hone their skills through planning and implementing an activity for open house and through daily active play activities that they will create and lead for the campers.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the camp teacher in one of the three cabins (ages 6-7, ages 8-10, and ages 11-12) with implementing daily camp lessons, projects, museum visits, library visits, field trips, and classroom management.
  • Assist with the evaluation efforts for StarPoint. This could include interviewing campers, monitoring progress on projects, and entering data.
  • Serve as a chaperone for camp field trips.
  • Assist with preparing the end of camp celebration and slide show including taking photos during camp.
  • Assist with StarPoint Open House (June 9, 5-7 p.m.) and the end of camp celebration (July 9, 5-7 p.m.)
  • Support the Kids Science Camp that will take place the week after StarPoint Summer Camp by assisting with the lessons, museum visits, and classroom management that will be held for children of employees at a local company.
  • Build a training manual for the internship that will be referenced by future StarPoint Summer Camp Cabin Interns.
  • Observe other departments and museum positions to learn more about the museum’s operations.
  • Assist with the evaluation of the StarPoint Summer Camp by typing up and sorting camper feedback from the Paper Chains evaluation activity.
  • Assist with other department projects and/or events as needed.

Qualifications

  • Have completed at least one year of college.
  • Have experience working with elementary age children.
  • Have an academic background in education, museum studies, or a related field.
  • Have good oral and written communication skills.
  • Have good customer service skills.
  • Have excellent organizational and research skills.
  • Have the ability to multi-task
  • Exhibit professional behavior and responsible work ethic
  • Have web researching skills and a basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Be available for full day training sessions on June 8 and 9.
  • Be available full time for all of the camp weeks –June 14-July 9, Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Be available for StarPoint Open House (June 9, 5-7 p.m.) and the end of camp celebration (July 9, 5-7 p.m.).
  • Be available full time for Kids Science Camp (July 12-16 from 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.).
