Description

The Research & Evaluation Intern at The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis supports ongoing evaluation and research efforts across a variety of museum departments. A focus for summer 2021 is a set of newly opened exhibits: Take Me There: Greece, Barbie: You Can Be Anything, and Dora & Diego. The completed evaluation studies for these exhibits will aid the Museum in understanding the visitor experience in the exhibits and their related programs and how future exhibits and programs can be designed to serve diverse audiences. The intern will collect data with visitors, analyze data, and prepare data summaries and reports. The intern will gain direct experience and skills in applied research. Through this experience, the intern may have opportunities to gain practical professional experience in social science research and educational evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Interviewing and facilitating surveys with visitors
  • Observing visitors as they use exhibits and participate in programs
  • Entering data and creating graphs in Excel
  • Participating in weekly staff meetings and project meetings

Qualifications

  • Preference given to students majoring in Museum Studies, Education, or Social and Behavioral Sciences (i.e., Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology), although other areas of study will be considered.
  • A minimum of 30 hours per week is required (35 hours maximum). Typical work days are Monday-Friday 9 am to 5 pm.
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience with or introductory college level coursework in social science research.
  • Must be friendly and warm with museum visitors and be comfortable approaching visitors to engage them in impromptu conversations.
  • Must have a basic working knowledge of data management programs (e.g., Excel) and Microsoft Office.
  • Requires excellent communications skills, both verbal and written, to prepare data summaries and concise reports.
  • Excellent attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
