The Amos Brown Internship, offered every summer, encourages students of color to seek careers in communications. Candidates for this position could be placed in the communications management, media or digital departments.

Amos Brown (1950-2015) hosted “Afternoons with Amos” on WTLC and wrote the “Just Tellin’ It” column in the Indianapolis Recorder. In 2007, Brown was inducted into the Indiana Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame and was a two-time winner of the IBA Spectrum Award. Active in Indianapolis civic affairs, Brown was a board member of the Indianapolis Urban League, Indianapolis United Way, Community Action Against Poverty and Indiana Black Expo. Brown worked with Hirons in 2010 as co-chair of the Indianapolis Census Complete Count Committee to promote census participation among residents.

To be considered, applicants must be a current junior, senior, master’s student or recent graduate in good academic standing, with priority given to students of color.

The intern will be selected by a panel of judges, including Oveda Brown, sister of Amos Brown; Deon Levingston, Radio One regional vice president and market manager; Shannon Williams, president of Indianapolis Recorder; and Sheila Smiley, Hirons senior vice president, media and digital. Once finished with the program, interns act as ambassadors for the program and serve as mentors to future Amos Brown interns.
