Description

The Riley Sports Legends Experience (RSLE) Intern works to assist with operations support and delivering interpretive experiences in the RSLE spaces for The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The Intern gains on-the-job experience while contributing their academic expertise to the world class visitor experiences developed and delivered at the museum. The incumbent works at the direction of RSLE Managers and Supervisors to learn about various aspects of the museum’s operations. The intern engages in research and gallery facilitation, service delivery, general administrative functions, scheduling and training. The intern participates in gallery and exhibit maintenance and customer service delivery as well as intern professional development in partnership with Intern Program Manager.

Through this experience, the Intern may have opportunities to gain practical professional experience in arts administration, sports administration, history, physical fitness, and health education through a variety of family-fun, indoor and outdoor assignments.

Responsibilities

1. Provides exceptional service and experiences to the visitors and guests of the museum in a fast paced professional environment.

2. Gains training and then executes positive, engaging visitor interactions. When assigned a post in the experience, remains visible and approachable in designated spaces. Learns and adheres to museum policies and procedures. Learns the presentation of specifically designated interpretation programs by researching subject matter, memorizing scripts, practicing skills, and honing presentation techniques.

3. Provides research and operational assistance to the director, manager, and supervisors of RSLE. Takes on assigned projects and programs, working autonomously, professionally and in a timely manner.

4. Engages in facilitation in the RSLE. Maintains general knowledge of all RSLE zones and in-depth knowledge of interpretation programs, service and family learning objectives for designated spaces.

5. Completes designated professional development training opportunities. Remains well versed in changing exhibit content, activities, scripts and facilitated programs. Gains and maintains an appropriate level of content knowledge for designated spaces in order to provide high quality experiences both formally and informally.

6. Prepares experience and exhibit spaces daily for visitors. Maintains a safe and inviting atmosphere. Greets visitors. Provides daily care and cleaning of exhibit and activities. Completes checklists and report all maintenance and safety concerns. Sets up and takes down sets, props, or equipment used in rehearsal and performance spaces.

7. Presents programs and interacts directly with visitors. Participates in set up and take down of experiences, games, activities, sets, props and seating; gathering audiences and conducting post performance discussion. Participates in evaluating staff and audience response to presentations.

8. Maintains cleanliness of costumes and uniforms, and notifies supervisor of larger needs. Maintains daily audience attendance records.

9. Interacts with visitors to help them understand exhibit concepts and content. Implements educational interpretive experiences in all assigned spaces to achieve the goals and objectives of the experience, and to help explain the main messages and concepts to visitors.

The Children’s Museum is open six to seven days per week. The Sports Legends Experience is open from mid-March through October. RSLE Interns will be provided the opportunity to work a flexible and varying schedule Tuesday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday. Interns are required to work at least one weekend day each week in accordance with the staffing needs of RSLE.

Qualifications

1. Current college student with sophomore status or higher at an accredited college or university.
2. Preference given to students receiving academic credit through their college or university
3. Experience working with children and youth in formal and informal environments.
4. Strong presentation and customer service skills. Background in sports experience preferred.
5. Must be able to work outdoors in extreme heat, cold, humid, unpredictable Indiana weather.
6. Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment that values diversity and is child-centric.
7. Interact with visitors and co-workers in a supportive, positive, and friendly manner.
8. Maintain behavior patterns acceptable to co-workers and the general museum culture.
