We are seeking a passionate and driven Economic Development Intern to join our team and contribute to our mission of fostering growth and prosperity through strategic planning and development initiatives.

As an Economic Development Intern at HWC, you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in economic analysis, community development, and project management within the context of civil engineering projects. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, you will support various aspects of economic development initiatives, conduct research, and assist in the implementation of strategies aimed at promoting economic growth and improving quality of life in communities.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on economic trends, industry sectors, and demographic data to identify opportunities for growth and development.
  • Collect and analyze data related to infrastructure projects, economic indicators, and community needs to inform decision-making processes.
  • Assist in outreach efforts to engage stakeholders, including local businesses, government agencies, and community organizations, to understand their needs and priorities.
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for economic development projects, including scheduling meetings, preparing presentations, and documenting project progress.
  • Assist in evaluating policy proposals and regulatory frameworks to assess their potential impact on economic development initiatives.
  • Prepare written reports, memos, and presentations summarizing research findings, project updates, and recommendations for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams within the firm, including engineers, planners, and project managers, to integrate economic development considerations into project planning and design.
  • Take advantage of training opportunities and mentorship to expand knowledge of economic development principles, best practices, and tools.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s degree program in Economics, Public Policy, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to interpret and synthesize complex data.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively convey technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data analysis tools.
  • Demonstrated interest in economic development, community planning, or related fields through coursework, internships, or extracurricular activities.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Collaborative mindset and willingness to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Knowledge of GIS software and experience with economic modeling tools is a plus
