Description

New Beginnings' mission is to increase the educational success of students by meeting the needs of children and their families through the partnerships of educational instutions, community service agencies, and the business community.

The summer camp tutor will assist pre-school, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten through sixth grade children with improving their reading skills through systematic reading/tutoring sessions, help with homework and virtual reading and math sessions.

The summer camp tutor will also assist with field trips and other learning experiences outside of the facility.

Responsibilities

1. Tutors assist children, pre-school, pre-kindergarten, and kindergarten through sixth grade in development of reading skills and enjoyment.

2. Tutors engage in academic activities with selected students either one-on-one or with small groups.

3. Tutors assist children with homework and instructional projects.

4. Tutors will collaborate with the community agency supervisor and staff members to assess the student's needs and how best to address them. Many of the children who the tutors work with are preforming below their expected academic grade level.

5. Communicate effectively with the agency supervisor and administrators.

6. Tutors will provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate and build confidence in students.

7. Tutors will complete daily reading logs, daily homework assignment logs, and weekly feedback reports on each student.

8. Tutors will participate in professional development trainings to learn "best practices" in the areas of reading, math, languag development, social and emotional and cognitive development.

9. Assist the teacher to implement the developmental assessment for each child.

10. Plan and assist the teacher in preparing materials and supplies in advance for activities.

11. Guide the child's behavior in positive ways that support total growth and development, and promote self-esteem.

12. Meet regularly with the teacher to develop and implement daily and weekly lesson plans.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

1. Excellent reading skills and willingness to share your "love of reading."

2. Attention to details regarding paperwork and the completion of children's progress reports.

3. Creativity and enthusiasm when covering lesson plans and teaching children to read.

4. Excellent people skills, enthusiasm for helping children, respectful attitude.

5. Ability to work separately with the student within a larger context of child/tutor groups.

6. Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Experience tutoring school age children.

2. Experience working with children age 3-5.

3. Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office.

4. Comfortable with shifting routines and school schedules.
